先般、2024年9月28日に発生した台風18号（国際名：クラトーン）の影響で、フィリピン共和国バタネス州に設置した垂直軸型マグナス式風力発電機実証機（以下、本実証機）が9月30日に破損したことをお知らせいたしました。  
なお、本実証機の破損による人的被害、二次被害はありませんでした。  

台風通過後、速やかに現地にて破損状況を確認するとともに、原因究明を実施いたしました。
その結果、破損当時に本実証機の近辺において、複数回にわたり本実証機の仕様を超える風（観測された最大風速はカテゴリー5相当の79.3m/s）が吹き、それに伴い機械ブレーキの滑りが発生し、過回転により破損に至ったことが判明しました。

バタネス州、バスコ市、及び日本の環境省と協議した結果、本実証機は撤去することとなりました。 

これまで本実証機から得られたデータや知見は、現在開発中の100㎾垂直軸型マグナス式風力発電機の開発に活かして参ります。 

本実証機の設置・実証にご協力いただきました皆様、本実証機を受け入れていただきましたバタネス州の皆様に、深く感謝申し上げます。

（参考）台風18号（国際名：クラトーン）について 
台風1８号は台風の勢力を表す分類でカテゴリー4（※）を記録しました。バタン島に直撃したため、水・電力・通信といった基幹インフラに重大な損傷が発生し、住民生活に甚大な被害が出ました。  

（※）台風を表す階級のひとつでカテゴリー１から5までの5段階に分けられます。カテゴリー4は最大風速が59~69m/s、カテゴリー5は最大風速が70m/s以上です。

Regarding the Vertical Axis Magnus-type Wind Turbine Demonstration Unit in the Philippines

Previously, we reported that, on September 30, the Vertical Axis Magnus-type Wind Turbine Demonstration Unit (hereinafter referred to as “the demonstration unit”) installed in Batanes Province, Republic of the Philippines, sustained damage due to Typhoon No. 18 (international name: Krathon), which formed on September 28. 

There was no human loss, injury or secondary damage as a result of the demonstration unit’s damage. 

Following the typhoon’s passage, we promptly assessed the damage on-site and conducted an investigation into the cause.  

The findings revealed that at the time of damage, wind speeds near the demonstration unit exceeded its design specifications (79.3 m/s), causing the mechanical brake to slip, which led to overspeed and eventual breakage. 

After discussions with the Batanes Provincial Government, the City of Basco, and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, it has been decided to remove the demonstration unit. 

The data and insights gained from this demonstration will be utilized in the development of the 100 kW Vertical Axis Magnus-type Wind Turbine, which is currently under development. 

We extend our deep gratitude to all those who contributed to the installation and operation of the demonstration unit, as well as to the people of Batanes for their support. 

(Ref) About Typhoon No. 18 (International Name: Krathon) 

Typhoon No. 18 was classified as a Category 4 typhoon (*) and caused significant damage to key infrastructure such as water and electricity supply, communications, etc. as it directly hit Batan Island. This resulted in severe disruptions to the daily lives of its residents. 

(*) Typhoons are classified on a scale from Category 1 to 5, with Category 4 indicating maximum wind speeds of 59–69 m/s. Category 5 has a maximum wind speed exceeding 70 m/s.
